Another familiar face will be in the running to replace Clallam County Sheriff Joe Hawe when the sheriff retires this fall.
Lonnie Steele, a tireless challenger who has campaigned unsuccessfully against Hawe for three elections, announced he is seeking the appointment as interim sheriff after Hawe departs Oct. 1.
The 50-year-old Joyce resident and owner of Liberty Security Patrol in Port Angeles said he wants to “represent the people” as interim sheriff.
Steele is the third person to declare his candidacy.
Soeren Poulsen, 58, a former California police officer and computer expert who lost to Hawe in last fall’s election, and Undersheriff Fred DeFrang, 52, whom Hawe requested as his successor, have both said they intend to apply for the opening.
Hawe, 54, announced a week ago that he will retire Oct. 1, after almost 13 years as sheriff, to head a statewide Internet mapping program of schools with the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs.
