VICTORIA — The American tourist who was arrested in Victoria on Tuesday after border agents discovered a small pipe bomb in the glove box of his pickup truck was released from custody Thursday.
Dodge Chichester White, 39, of Issaquah was arrested shortly after he arrived from Port Angeles aboard the MV Coho ferry.
He was charged Wednesday with unlawful possession of an explosive device, according to documents from the British Columbia Provincial Court in Victoria.
White was released on $1,000 bail after spending two nights in the Victoria Police jail. He will have to return on Sept. 7 for his next court date.
Raised agents’ interest
A spokeswoman for Canada Border Services Agency said White raised the interest of agents, who interview every person who arrives in Canada from the MV Coho.
White was referred for a second interview with agents and then the explosive device was discovered in White’s vehicle, said Faith St. John, a spokeswoman for the agency.
She would not say what raised the interest of border officials because the investigation is ongoing.
The explosive, which is made out of a three-inch brass tube and fitted with a six-inch canon fuse, contained black powder.
