Alternative, traditional medical care offerings at new Port Townsend business

PORT TOWNSEND — A new facility that seeks to provide one-stop shopping for alternative medical care has opened in Port Townsend.

“We are the only alternative wellness center that is devoted to providing primary medical care on the Olympic Peninsula,” said Dr. Molly Force, who owns and operates the business.

She went on to explain: “After the primary care, we can provide treatment such as motion therapy and yoga instruction to put the patient on a healthy path.”

Called the Prosper Wellness Center, and including the adjacent Prosper Body Works, the newly renovated facility is at 213 Decatur St., along the Washington Street waterfront.

The facility includes two naturopaths, Force and Dr. Alicia Burr.

Along with three massage therapists, the facility features a service called Hot Yoga and Hot Pilates.

The studio can be heated to 110 degrees, although the average class is in a 90-degree environment where the participant sweats out the body’s toxins, according to Force.

“This is a good therapy for anyone who wants to jump-start weight loss or relieve anxiety or depression,” Force said.

The clinic also includes an apothecary, where many herbal remedies are stored and dispensed by prescription.

Conventional or alternative

Force also can prescribe conventional Western medications and, she said, can treat patients with either alternative or conventional medicine, or a combination thereof.

Force, 29, has lived in Port Townsend for four years.

She previously worked at a clinic on Monroe Street before moving to the new location.

She said she has treated 500 patients, with about half of that number active.

Port Townsend has the same health concerns as most areas of the country, according to Force. These concerns include cardiovascular, hormonal, thyroid and autoimmune issues.

But obesity, although a national epidemic, is less of an issue in Port Townsend, she said. “It has a lot to do with diet and local food.”

“The people around here connect with nature and go hiking a lot.”

The clinic is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
