PORT TOWNSEND — The American Legion Post 26 building is under going renovations inside and out.
The building, which is from the World War II-era, has become dilapidated, Post Commander Joe Carey said .
The roof of the building on the corner of Water and Monroe streets in downtown Port Townsend was removed and replaced.
A new, electric furnace was put in the basement to heat the homeless shelter, which operates there during the winter months.
New paint has been applied, new drywall is being installed, the electrical work is being redone.
“By the time we are done here, the total cost will be in excess of $25,000,” Carey said.
“We have seen a lot of donations, but that is still a lot.”
Carey said the post lacks about $3,000 to pay for the most recent repairs, but members hope a car raffle and fundraising partnerships with Olympic Community Action Programs will bridge the gap.
“We are getting pretty close, but still, we’re not there yet.
The post is selling raffle tickets for a 1985 Ford Crown Victoria at $1 each.
“You can win a vehicle which is in great shape,” Carey said.
“Or if you win, and you don’t want the car, you can take a $1,000 prize instead and we can sell the car off.”
