PORT TOWNSEND — This community’s own 135-foot schooner Adventuress will be in port today through Monday, the first of a flotilla of tall ships to moor in Port Townsend Bay during the coming week.
Port Townsend will relive its historic role as a provisioning port for several tall sailing vessels en route from Port Angeles and Victoria, B.C., heading toward the 2005 Tacoma Tall Ships Festival being held July 2-4.
Between Monday and Wednesday and again July 5-6, tall ships are scheduled to stop en route from the public exhibitions in Port Angeles, Victoria and Tacoma.
Adventuress, a National Historic Landmark Vessel, offers a public sail Saturday to Discovery Bay. Then it continues on to Port Ludlow until June 30. From Port Ludlow, it will set sail to Tacoma on July 1.
Mexican naval training ship
Port Townsend is tentatively scheduled to host the Mexican naval training ship Cuauhtemoc, described as an impressive square-rigger with more than 100 crew members.
Arriving Monday and departing Tuesday, the 270-foot barque will precede the 112-foot brig Lady Washington of Grays Harbor, the 122-foot square-topsail schooner Lynx of Newport Beach, Calif., and the 129-foot schooner Bill of Rights of Los Angeles, the latter making her first trip to the Pacific Northwest.
These vessels are scheduled to arrive Tuesday afternoon and spend the night on Port Townsend Bay.
