PORT TOWNSEND — The historic schooner Adventuress is in drydock at the Port of Port Townsend Boat Haven to have its port bow rebuilt.
The project is funded through the National Park Service’s “Save America’s Treasures” $180,000 grant.
The grant is intended to get the Adventuress shipshape for its 100th birthday in 2013, said Catherine Collins, executive director of Sound Experience, a nonprofit organization that organizes environmental education and leadership programs aboard the schooner.
On Wednesday, stairs to the deck of the Adventuress were under construction. Several volunteers and shipwrights with Haven Boatworks are involved in the work project, which is scheduled for completion at the Port of Port Townsend Boat Haven in April, Collins said.
Since Sound Experience was founded in 1988, more than 50,000 — mostly youths — have sailed aboard, exploring the ecology and history of Puget Sound.
In 1989, Adventuress was named a National Historic Landmark.
Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Belfair, of the 6th Congressional District which includes the North Olympic Peninsula, is credited with helping to push through the grant for the rebuilding.
