Accused getaway driver in Port Angeles hit-and-run arrested a third time

PORT ANGELES — Timothy P. Smith — the accused getaway driver in a hit-and-run last month — was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of not charging his court-ordered ankle bracelet.

That marks his third arrest since the hit-and-run that occurred April 13 on South Laurel Street near Viewcrest Avenue.

The 27-year-old Port Angeles resident allegedly drove Michael J. Moyle — who is accused of intentionally ramming a car carrying four people, including two small children — after the wreck.

The four passengers were hospitalized; each was released within a few days.

The bracelet tracks the movements of offenders and alleged offenders to ensure they are not violating their terms of release.

Friendship Diversion Services of Clallam County, which monitors the bracelet, made repeated attempts to reach Smith, including phone calls, when it received notice that the bracelet was low on power, said Port Angeles Police Sgt. Barb McFall.

That occurred at 6:34 a.m., she said.

An alarm on the bracelet also went off before it died at about 7:30 a.m., McFall said.

Smith phoned Friendship Diversion at about noon, shortly before police arrived at his home to make the arrest, she said.

He told the organization that he was asleep when the alarm went off and while the organization attempted to reach him, McFall said.

Smith was being held Tuesday in Clallam County jail without bail.

A judge will determine his bail today, McFall said.

Smith was first arrested after the hit-and-run when he turned himself in to authorities April 14.

He was arrested again April 20 after police said they found a stolen motorcycle in his auto body shop and methamphetamine in his home.

Police also said Smith was violating his curfew when the arrest was made.

Smith will be tried June 13 on charges of first-degree rendering criminal assistance and first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm and July 11 on charges of second-degree possession of stolen property and possession of a controlled substance.

Moyle, 28, remains in jail.

He will be tried June 20 on first-degree assault of a child, two counts of second-degree assault, second-degree assault of a child — all of which come with an alternative charge of vehicular assault — and hit-and-run injury accident.
