PORT ANGELES — A free “Art Ranger” tour of the outdoor gallery known as Webster’s Woods is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
More than 100 works of art — from sculptures and prisms to artfully arranged sweaters, shoes and seashells — are integrated into the forest that wraps around the center.
Curator Jake Seniuk will guide a 90-minute walk through it all, helping visitors notice the pieces artists have been adding to the natural environment each summer since 2000.
Among the highlights are Seattle artist Rebecca Cummins’ “Deer Cam,” a mirrored box that contains a hidden camera; “Root Dance,” a suspended tree created by Diana Liljelund of Bainbridge Island and an installation of “soul vessels,” tiny clay bowls laid by Walla Walla artist Anne Bullock.
There’s also a meadow studded with more than a dozen works including Sheila Klein’s Eyelash Bench and the “Pi a la Mode” sculpture by Micah Bienvenu.
Newcomers encouraged
Seniuk encourages newcomers to come into the woods with him, regardless of previous experience with fine art.
“The woods is about walking and looking,” he has said. “If you can walk and look, you’re ready.”
You’ll enjoy the exploration if you wear shoes suitable for dirt trail walking, Seniuk added. The paths through Webster’s Woods are steep in spots and can be muddy after a rain.
Before or after the Art Ranger tour, visitors can look inside the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center for “Envision Cascadia,” an exhibition by 33 artists from the United States and Canada.
The show features humorous, optimistic, lighthearted and dark works around the theme of what the Pacific Northwest’s future holds.
The Webster’s Woods art park and the fine arts center are found off Lauridsen Boulevard behind the Jones Street reservoir tank.
The woods are open from dawn to dusk, while the fine arts center is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Admission to both is free.
