A great weekend to experience the North Olympic Peninsula

The North Olympic Peninsula is hopping with events this weekend.

Here’s a rundown of events in addition to the celebration of Clallam County’s 150th anniversary.

* Jazz in the Olympics is already under way in Port Angeles, where 11 traditional jazz bands from the United States and Canada are showcased on four different stages around the city.

Festival performances resume today at 2 p.m. and continue through Sunday afternoon.

Bands will start the crowds swinging at the Red Lion Hotel, 221 N. Lincoln St.; Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St.; Port Angeles City Hall Council Chambers, 321 E. Fifth St.; and the Eagles Club, 110 S. Penn St.

Daylong admission passes range from $15 to $30, with special discounts for high school students and for shows after 7 p.m.

For a schedule and more information on Jazz in the Olympics, see Peninsula Spotlight in this edition.

* In Port Townsend, car shows, monster trucks, autocross racing, 4-by-4 events, vintage motorcycle displays, an Indy 500 racecar and appearances by actors Lorenzo Lamas and Barbara Moore are among the highlight of the fourth annual JeffCo Expo at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds this weekend.

Gates at the fairgrounds, 4907 Landes St., are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday during the two-day event.

Lamas, the son of Fernando Lamas and Arlene Dahl, began his acting career with a small role in the television show “Switch” in 1976. He also had a role in the movie “Grease.”

Lamas stars in the cable television series “Renegade,” and is known for his portrayal of Lance Cumson on the nighttime soap “Falcon Crest.”

Moore, a Washington native, lists two notable guest appearances — “Blossom” in 1991 and “Married with Children” in 1987 — in her television credits.

Her movie credits include a role in “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery” from 1997.

She was Playboy magazine’s Playmate of the Month in December 1992.

More information about JeffCo Expo is available in today’s Peninsula Spotlight.

* Also in Port Townsend this weekend, everything — or nearly everything — nautical will be available to buy or sell during the Wooden Boat Foundation’s Swap Meet on Saturday.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cupola House, 380 Jefferson St., at Point Hudson.

Sails, line, hardware, tools, anchors, electronics, books magazines, kayaks, timber, whole boats and maybe even the galley sink will be on sale.

The foundation is also accepting donations of quality marine equipment for sale. All items being donated need to be delivered today to the foundation at Point Hudson.

Money from the swap meet support the foundation’s continuing on-the-water activities for youths and adults.

The foundation’s Web site is www.woodenboat.org for information and a calendar of upcoming events.

* Quilcene Heritage Days and the Brinnon Loyalty Day Parade take place this weekend. See the stories below, and the complete Quilcene schedule in Peninsula Spotlight.

* On the West End’s Pacific coast, about 500 volunteers will collect and haul marine debris from the beaches Saturday in the fifth annual Olympic Coast Cleanup.

The volunteers will comb Pacific Ocean beaches from Kalaloch in Olympic National Park to Hobuck Beach on the Makah reservation on Clallam County’s northwest coast, plus beaches from Ocean Shores to Moclips in Grays Harbor County.

Participants have pre-registered for the event and are asked to check-in at specific sites. More information on the cleanup can be found on the Internet at www.olympiccoastcleanup.us.
