PORT ANGELES — More than 21 tons of tires were removed from Hurricane Ridge by Olympic National Park staff and crew members from the Coast Guard cutter Active last week.
The tires were placed at the bottom of the Poma ski lift in the early 1980s to provide a ramp for skiers to access the lift, said Barb Maynes, Olympic National Park spokesperson.
The Active is based in Port Angeles, but is in dry dock.
Last spring, the Active crew also helped the Olympic National Park staff remove debris from the park’s campgrounds from the winter storms.
Beginning on Tuesday, Maynes said 10 Olympic National Park staff and 10 Active crew members began moving the tires about 200 yards to an area where they could be airlifted to the Hurricane Ridge parking lot.
They finished the job on Thursday, she said.
