A bid award for the multimillion-dollar Hood Canal Bridge modernization project and Port Angeles graving dock to build the floating bridge’s components could be let later this week.
Kiewit-General of Poulsbo. a joint operation of Kiewit Building Group and General Construction, submitted the apparent low bid of $204 million last week.
“Hopefully, this week we will be able to make a decision,” said Ron Lewis project manager for the state Department of Transportation in Olympia.
“We are still verifying a few things. It should be mid-week to late week,” he said.
“I’m hoping the sooner, the better.”
Kiewit’s bid is substantially lower than two other bids: H.S. Bridge Constructors of Longmont, Colo., bid $253.8 million, and Hood Canal Bridge Constructors of Watsonville, Calif., bid $258.5 million.
All three represent separate groups of firms that have merged to bid for the contract. The project is so large that no single contractor can afford it alone.
