New citizens find financial inclusivity with Peninsula Credit Union

Navigating new systems and cultures can be challenging; the right services make all the difference

With a commitment to inclusion and trust in financial services, Peninsula Credit Union has become a premier banking option for new citizens who may feel uneasy or lack a safe place to conduct banking transactions.

The local credit union extends membership eligibility to anyone living, working, studying or worshiping in the five counties spanning Port Townsend to Shelton, WA. Family members of those individuals are also welcome, notes Darla Kolbas, Lending Director at Peninsula Credit Union.

“We’re really proud to say that we offer all of our banking services to everybody. Whether members possess a Social Security Number or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, they’re provided with equal access to loan products without facing higher rates or down payments.”

This practice, established in March 2023, reflects the credit union’s commitment to supporting its community fairly.

“We make sure to provide financial education first because we want new citizens to succeed. We don’t want them to think, ‘Oh, it’s just $500 and they don’t have to pay it back,’” Kolbas says.

Peninsula’s services extend beyond basic banking. Members have access to various loan options, including personal loans, auto loans, land loans, construction loans and first mortgages. These services are offered equally to all members, fostering a sense of trust and accessibility.

“I believe that understanding the reasons behind their concerns and offering empathy has fostered trust with our clients. Once they trust us, their fears dissipate.”

Kolbas’s personal connection to this service runs deep.

“Coming from a mother who is an immigrant, it means everything to me because these are people at the end of the day. They’re human, they’re hard-working folks, and if we can be a helping hand in that aspect for them, it makes our job even that much more fulfilling.”

By fostering trust and providing essential services to all members, Peninsula Credit Union’s efforts demonstrate how financial institutions can play a pivotal role in supporting new citizens, offering them the tools and education they need to build a secure financial future.

To learn more about the financial services available, Kolbas encourages those interested to schedule a consultation at their local Peninsula Credit Union Branch and stay updated on Facebook.
