Grammy-winning Antonio Sánchez brings Birdman Live to Field Hall

Drummer performs live score for the iconic film

Field Arts & Events Hall will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Academy Award-winning film Birdman with four-time Grammy-winning composer and drummer Antonio Sánchez on Jan. 24.

Sánchez will perform his groundbreaking grammy-winning solo drum score live on stage, synced with the film playing on the big screen.

Antonio Sánchez’s original score for Birdman — a fully improvised solo drum composition —became a character of its own in the film. Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu praised the drums for providing the film’s emotional undercurrent, calling them “a great way to find the rhythm of the film.” The Guardian hailed Sánchez’s live performances as “dynamic and emotionally precise.”

Birdman is a dark comedy-drama about a washed-up actor (Michael Keaton) struggling to revive his career by writing, directing, and starring in a Broadway adaptation of Raymond Carver’s short story “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love”. Acclaimed local poet Tess Gallagher will introduce the film and share insights into her collaboration with Iñárritu and the process of bringing her late husband and Port Angeles resident Raymond Carver’s work to the screen.

“We are thrilled to have both Tess and Antonio sharing their experience behind the film,” said Steven Raider-Ginsburg, Executive & Artistic Director of Field Hall. “Antonio’s stunning performance is framed by his personal experience building a musical score intended to replace traditional camera cuts. His live performance is electric – fans of film, jazz, and the live process of creating art will not want to miss this one-of-a-kind experience.”

Born in Mexico City, Antonio Sánchez began playing drums at age five and went on to become one of the most sought-after jazz drummers in the world. A graduate of Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory, Sánchez has collaborated with legends like Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, and Charlie Haden.

Tickets for Birdman Live range from $20 to $35 and are available at fieldhallevents.org. The performance begins at 7 p.
