Two enrollment periods that are upon us
• Medicare Annual Enrollment Period runs Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 – generally the one time of year a Medicare beneficiary can enroll in or change Part D prescription drug or Medicare Advantage plans.
• Individual and Family Open Enrollment Period runs Nov. 1 to Jan. 15 – enrollment must take place by Dec. 15 for a Jan. 1 effective date. This is the one time of year to enroll in or change plans without a qualifying life event, such as a birth, a move or loss of coverage.
Family Glitch
Since the rollout of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, there’s been a lot of frustration about a known flaw called the “Family Glitch.”
It prevented anyone in the household from receiving tax credits if they were offered affordable health insurance through their employer. Because the calculation to determine tax credit eligibility was based only on the employee’s cost to enroll on the lowest cost option, many families found themselves without an affordable health insurance option.
As of Jan. 1, 2023, this will be corrected, and many more households will find themselves eligible to receive tax credits.
Cascade Care
Also on Jan. 1, 2023, the state of Washington will implement a state subsidy program called Cascade Care Savings. To be eligible, enrollees must have a household income below 250 percent of the Federal Poverty Level, be enrolled on a Cascade Care Silver or Gold plan and be taking advantage of all the federal tax credits available to them.
