GARDINER — Wild Birds Unlimited will host its annual Earth Day Celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, with an appearance by a special guest, Zeuffi, a white morph Gyre Falcon.
Zeuffi is the Discovery Bay Wild Bird Rescue’s newest avian ambassador. Cindy and Connor Daily of the nonprofit will present birds of prey from noon to 2 p.m.
Visitors also can create their own falcon masks and find out more about the rescue center.
Food will be onsite through the Southern Nibbles Food Truck, a Blyn business specializing in South Carolina Lowcountry style food.
The Cash for Feeders Garage Sale will offer refurbished bird feeders, pole systems, baffles and more, with monies going to support Discovery Bay Wild Bird Rescue.
“So bring the kids and some lawn chairs or a blanket … and relax in our beautiful gardens overlooking Discovery Bay and learn about the organizations in our neck of the woods who strive to make our world a better place for all,” Wild Birds Unlimited said in a press release.
Other special guests for the day include:
• The Dungeness River Nature Center — Their mission is to inspire understanding, respect, and stewardship of our natural and cultural resources. Volunteers of the center will be present and visitors can make crafts.
• Olympic Peninsula Audubon — OPAS promotes birding and habitat conservation through science-based education, advocacy, and stewardship and offer free bird walks every Wednesday.
• Peninsula Friends of Animals — The cage-less, no-kill, nonprofit animal welfare group has served the Olympic Peninsula since 2000.
• Jefferson CountyTrash Taskforce — The group, which picks up trash in Jefferson County, is seeking volunteers.
• Port Townsend StyroCyclers — This Local 20/20 Beyond Waste Project, also seeks volunteers. The StyroCyclers provide residents of East Jefferson County with ways to recycle styrofoam (expanded polystyrene, EPS). They also accept clean and dry packing peanuts and food trays.
• Eagle Creek Native Plants — Gardiner native Mike Gatchet has been selling plants in Gardiner since the 1960s. He offers low maintenance native plants that help pollinators, birds and soil.
Donations of both goods and/or money will be collected for Discovery Bay Wild Birds Rescue.
“Spring is Baby Season for the Centers and they are in dire need of supplies,” Wild Birds Unlimited said.
Needed are dog food, small animal-watering bottles, baby bottles to feed the baby deer, powdered goats milk, KMR, alfalfa, chain-link fencing, paper towels, Kleenex, potty pads (human or puppy) laundry baskets, heating pads, small dishes like crocks or ashtrays, Exact Baby Bird food, mealworms, dog or cat food (wet or dry), towels, new or gently used wool blankets, vet wrap, clothes pins, bleach, dawn dish soap, hair dryers and play pens. Gift Certificates to Petco, Walmart and Wild Birds Unlimited.
