PORT HADLOCK — Sociology professor Teresa Ciabattari will present the first of three 2017 Inquiring Minds programs at the Jefferson County Library, “White Privilege: The Other Side of Racial Inequality,” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The presentation, which is co-sponsored by the Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau, is free at the library at 620 Cedar Ave.

Racial inequality

Ciabattari will discuss how conversations about racial inequality in American society generally focus on the disadvantages faced by people of color and will show guests another side to this inequality: privilege — the advantages that white people experience because of their race.

Ciabattari’s presentation will offer an interactive conversation that explores what white privilege is with a variety of examples of privilege for individuals and institutions, and she will provide tools for learning how to address it.

Ciabattari is a sociologist at Pacific Lutheran University, where she has been involved in several racial justice initiatives and dialogues.

UW graduate

She earned a doctorate in sociology from the University of Washington in 2001 and has been a faculty member at Pacific Lutheran University since 2007.
