WEEKEND: Sequim Irrigation Festival float to be rolled out Saturday

BLYN — The Sequim 2012 Irrigation Festival float will be rolled out before the festival’s kickoff dinner and auctions on Saturday.

The float — designed with this year’s festival theme, “117 & Still Growin’ Green” in mind — will be presented to the public for the first time at about 4:45 p.m. in front of 7 Cedars Casino, 270756 U.S. Highway 101, in Blyn.

Royalty, dignitaries

Royalty and dignitaries for the 117th festival, which is scheduled May 4-13 in Sequim, will be presented at the dinner which begins in the Club Seven Lounge in the casino at 5 p.m., immediately after the float is displayed.

There will also be live and silent auctions.

Tickets are sold out for the event, Tawana Borden, its director, said Wednesday.

About 175 tickets have been purchased, she said.

The 2012 Sequim Irrigation Festival court, all Sequim High School juniors who were selected March 3, is made up of Queen Abigail Berry, Princess Amanda Dronenberg, Princess Natalie Stevenson and Princess Arianna Flores.

The four young women will represent the city during the Sequim festival and at other festivities around the state.

Grand Marshal Darrell Sharp will lead the 2012 Sequim Irrigation Festival Grand Parade on May 12.

Grand Pioneers are Jerry Angiuli and Caroline Baumunk. Honorary Grand Pioneers are Margaret Erickson and Chuck Baumunk.

A Grand Pioneer is one who was born and has lived most of his or her life in the Sequim area, while an Honorary Pioneer has lived most of the past 40 years in the Sequim area.

Junior royalty, chosen from students at Helen Haller and Greywolf elementary schools, are the winners of an essay contest, “What Do You Love About Sequim?”

Junior court members from Greywolf are King Jarrett Allen, fifth grade, and Queen Mikayla Halady, third grade.

From Helen Haller, they are Queen Stephanie Lynn Calderon, third grade, and King Oscar Walchenbach, third grade.

Queen in attendance

Jennifer Horton, the festival’s queen in 2002, will provide entertainment.

The kickoff dinner will be the first chance to view this year’s festival lapel pin and bid on numbered festival pins and other festival merchandise as well as on auction items donated by area businesses.
