PORT ANGELES — The second annual Vern Burton Rock, Gem and Jewelry Show will offer displays for everyone from beginners to professionals this weekend.
The show of 43 vendors will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
Admission is free.
The show has a special emphasis on children, said organizer Cindy Kochanek.
“We want to stress that it is family- and kid-oriented,” said Kochanek of the show sponsored by the city of Port Angeles Recreation Division.
“A lot of the vendors bring tumbled rocks for the kids, and all will take time to explain” the types of rocks and give other information to children, she said.
Children will receive free cut-and-polished little thunder egg halves while supplies last.
The event will offer sales of rocks and jewelry and provide information for those interested in rock-hounding or jewelry-making.
Kochanek will display the giant thunder eggs, agate-filled nodules she and her husband have found over the past five years on the border of Oregon and Idaho.
The eggs, some of which weigh up to 89 pounds, are now cut and polished and ready to be shown.
Kochanek also donated a 1-carat blue Montana sapphire in a 14-carat gold necklace to be raffled to raise money for the city of Port Angeles Youth and Family program.
Raffle tickets are $1.
The city Employee Association will offer breakfast and lunch for sale at the event.
