WEEKEND: Park to sponsor beach cleanup, other events

PORT ANGELES — On Saturday, Olympic National Park will waive entrance fees for all visitors, sponsor a coastal beach cleanup and offer other special activities in recognition of National Public Lands Day.

Other ONP fees, including wilderness camping and campground fees, will remain in effect.

ONP, Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary and CoastSavers will host a coastal cleanup on the 3-mile shoreline between Cape Alava and Sand Point.

Volunteers are needed for two different jobs.

The first involves hiking 3 miles to the coast and then walking along the shore to gather marine debris into bags.

Bagging debris

Others will carry bagged debris from the beach to the Ozette Ranger Station.

Porters should be ready to make at least one 6-mile round trip from the trailhead to the beach.

Debris bags and light refreshments will be provided for volunteers.

Space is limited for the beach cleanup, and advance registration is required at the CoastSavers website, www.coastsavers.org

For more information about the cleanup, potential volunteers should phone Heather Stephens, ONP volunteer coordinator, at 360-565-3141 or Rosie Perera at 360-565-3142.

Other activities are scheduled at locations around the park on Saturday:

■ Elwha Discovery Walks at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The walks through the former Lake Aldwell lake bed, now exposed by the removal of Elwha Dam.

The walks are at the same time Sunday.

Participants need to meet at the parking lot at the end of Lake Aldwell Road.

■ Hall of Mosses Walk at the Hoh Rainforest at 2 p.m.

■ Terrace Talk at Hurricane Ridge at 11 a.m.

■ One-hour guided walk at Hurricane Ridge at 2 p.m.

Additional information about activities and things to do in the park is available at the ONP website at www.nps.gov/olym.

Or phone the park’s main Visitor Center in Port Angeles at 360-565-3130.
