Apple press festival
PORT ANGELES — The fifth annual Apple Press and Fun Fest will be held at New Life Open Bible Church, corner of Sixth and Peabody streets, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
The public can bring a container and take home fresh-squeezed apple cider from an old-fashioned apple press, enjoy games, a bounce house for children, face painting and chili and other goodies.
Apple donations are appreciated.

Cribbage benefit set
PORT ANGELES — The PA Peggers Cribbage Club will host a seven-game cribbage tournament Saturday to raise funds for Maggie McNeece, a club member and local nurse fighting ovarian cancer.
The event, a combination cribbage tournament and Halloween costume party, will be held in the new Eagles building, 2843 E. Myrtle St., from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The public is invited as guests of the PA Peggers, all of whom are Eagles members.
Admission is $10 per person.
Entries to win a queen-size Irish chain quilt also will be available, with all proceeds donated to McNeece.

Wreath orders taken
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Garden Club will take orders for decorated evergreen holiday wreaths during the Port Angeles Farmers Market each Saturday from this Saturday to Nov. 10.
The wreath-making events will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each week at The Gateway transit center, corner of Front and Lincoln streets.
The benefit is one of the Port Angeles Garden Club’s major fundraisers. Proceeds support club activities, civic involvement and scholarships.

Bake sale benefit
PORT ANGELES — The Answer For Youth will hold a bake sale benefit at Swain’s General Store, 602 E. Front St., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Items for sale will include Halloween goodies, “Pam’s Famous Pumpkin Bread,” “Norma and Stacey’s Batty Brownies,” “Patsy’s To-Die-For Cinnamon Rolls” and organic dog biscuits.
The Answer For Youth is a nonprofit drop-in center that serves at-risk and street youths.
Harvest party set
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Victory Garden Harvest Party will be held at Olympic Vineyard Church, 3415 S. Peabody St., from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
Attendees are asked to bring a dish to share, as well as plates and utensils.

PORT ANGELES — Moose Lodge No. 996 will hold a “Show It! Don’t Store It” car show benefit for Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
The car show will be held at the Moose Lodge, corner of Eighth and Pine streets.
Vehicle staging will begin at 9 a.m.
Owners can display their vehicles for a $20 donation.
Hot dogs, hamburgers and soda will be available by donation.
The event is open to the public and will be held rain or shine.
SEQUIM
Animal cooperation
SEQUIM — Biologist Fred Sharpe will discuss animal cooperation with an emphasis on humpback whales at Nash’s Farm Store, 4681 Sequim-Dungeness Way, at 7 p.m. today.
Sharpe is principal investigator and a co-founding board member of the Alaskan Whale Foundation.
He will discuss his research on Alaska’s bubble-netting whale pods, including their use of tools, sounds and enduring bonds to capture elusive fish schools.
Sharpe received his doctorate from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia in 2002.
His research on humpback whales in Southeast Alaska has been a centerpiece of the Alaskan Whale Foundation since the organization’s inception.
Sharpe has tried to understand whales’ social foraging behavior, known as “bubble-net feeding.”
He also is an expert on birds and plant life on the Pacific Northwest and a pen and ink illustrator.
His handiwork can be seen in the books Birding in the San Juan Islands and Wild Plants of the San Juan Islands.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
Agnew meeting set
AGNEW — An Agnew Neighborhood Watch Meeting will be held at Agnew Hall, 1241 N. Barr Road, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today.
The meeting will provide an overview of the programs and services offered by the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office’s Neighborhood Watch program.
Information on how to “target harden” homes and property, how to communicate and report incidents to the Sheriff’s Office, and information on code enforcement will be presented.
The meeting is free and open to the public.
Book reading set
SEQUIM — Author Ree Huston will read from her new book, Nature’s Gifts: A Family Fun Book, Exploring Pictures, Prose, & Poetry at the Good Book, 108 W. Washington from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. today and Saturday.
Since Halloween is near, the chapter “Let’s Go Batty” will reveal interesting viewpoints about bats and their importance. All ages, including children, are welcome to attend.
Huston will provide signed copies of purchased books.

SEQUIM — A “Put Up a Fight for Women’s Rights” rally will be held at Sequim Avenue and Washington Street at noon Saturday.
The rally is sponsored by Clallam County MoveOn, the Juan de Fuca Freethinkers, the International Brotherhood of Education Workers 46, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 997 and Service Employees International Union.

Social change theater
PORT TOWNSEND — In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Mandala Center for Change in association with Dove House will “Behind Closed Doors” an interactive theater performance and community dialogue featuring the Poetic Justice Theatre Ensemble.
The event will be held at the Pope Marine Building, corner of Water and Madison streets in downtown Port Townsend, at 7 p.m. today.
Admission is free, but donations are welcome to support the advocacy services of Dove House.
Mushroom walk set
PORT TOWNSEND – A mushroom walk will be held at Fort Townsend State Park, 1370 Old Fort Townsend Road, on Sunday.
Walkers will meet at the upper parking lot at 1 p.m.
A Discover Pass is needed to park at Fort Townsend State Park.
Mushroom experts Anita and Art Price will lead a two-hour stroll through the park.
There are a wide assortment of colorful fungi to see. Participants are encouraged to dress warmly as the walk will not be fast-paced.
This hike is being sponsored by the Olympic chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society and Friends of Fort Townsend State Park.

FORKS/WEST END
1940s-themed benefit
FORKS — A USO-inspired, 1940s-themed party will be held Saturday as a benefit for Sarge’s Place, a transitional-housing project for veterans.
The family-friendly event will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Roundhouse, 110 Industrial Park at the junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 110.
The benefit will include live music, desserts, classic cars and military vehicles, pinup clothing and an art auction.
Admission is by donation.
The event also will include the unveiling of a clay miniature version of a statue of Lance Cpl. Jason Hanson.
Hanson, born and raised in Forks, was killed in action in Iraq in 2006.
The miniature will show the pose that will be cast for the life-size bronze statue.
Artist Jeff Oen will be on hand to discuss the process of creating the bronze piece.
