FORKS/WEST END
West End Thunder
FORKS — West End Thunder plans drag races of an eighth of a mile and a Show and Shine classic car, truck and motorcycle show Saturday and Sunday.
Gates open at 9 a.m., and racing begins at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at Forks Municipal Airport.
Admission per day is $10 per person, with those 12 and younger admitted free.
The fee is $15 per show car or motorcycle and driver, and $30 per race car and driver.
The weekend is the third of five racing weekends that the West End Thunder club will host this summer.
Others coming up will be Aug. 11-12 and Sept. 15-16.
The grand finale will be on the final weekend, which will feature Northwest Nostalgia Top Eliminator Association dragsters.

Plant clinic
FORKS — The Master Gardeners of Clallam County will host a free plant clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
The clinic will be at Forks Outfitters-Ace Hardware.
It is free and open to all non-commercial gardeners who need assistance in plant identification, advice on sick plants and treatment options and other general plant questions.

Design skate deck
PORT ANGELES — Young people can design their own skateboard decks at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., at 3 p.m. Saturday.
The same seminar, which is for youths in grades 6-12, will be at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2.
Skateboard decks and paint will be provided, and participants will leave the workshop with completed decks.

Wire art program
PORT ANGELES — Lauren Johnson of Udjat Beads will present a wire art program for youths at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., at 3 p.m. today.
The class, for those in grades 6-12, is part of the Clallam County library system’s “Own the Night” summer reading series.
Johnson will teach how to use wire to transform objects into jewelry and wall hangings.
Participants can bring rock, glass, beads, buttons or small objects from home to incorporate into their designs, keeping in mind that they may be used in a necklace or small wall hanging.

Kids nature event
PORT ANGELES — A hands-on interactive program for children will be presented by NatureBridge at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Participants will explore the history of the river and the events that led to the historic Elwha restoration project, play with a river model to experience how the river sediment will be affected by the removal of the dams and get a chance to participate in balloon mapping and learn about other research being conducted along the Elwha River.
NatureBridge is a nonprofit organization working to connect young people to nature, strengthen environmental literacy and support experiential environmental science outside the “traditional” classroom.
The River Fun programs are offered in conjunction with “River Story,” a multifaceted visual exhibit accompanied by an extensive schedule of programs and events presented through Sept. 8 at the library.

Teen movie times
SEQUIM — Weekly Friday movies for teens will continue at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., at 5:30 p.m. today.
Today’s movie is “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist,” where two lonesome teens (Michael Cera and Kat Dennings) make a love connection as they prowl the streets of New York looking for their favorite band’s secret show, as well as for their drunk friend Caroline.
The library will present films as part of the “Own the Night” summer reading program through July 27.
The movies, selected by the library’s Young Adult Advisory Group around a “night” theme, are appropriate for teens ages 13 and older.
Upcoming films include “The Phantom of the Opera” on July 20 and “The Chronicles of Riddick” on July 27.
On movie nights only, the meeting room and lobby of the Sequim Library will be open.
Staff will supervise the event, and theater-style refreshments will be provided.

Book discussion
SEQUIM — Water for Elephants, by Sara Gruen, will be discussed at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., at 3 p.m. Saturday.
The novel opens with a day of disaster at the traveling circus and the admission of a secret kept for more than 70 years.
Moving between protagonist Jacob Jankowski’s present as a 90-something in a nursing home and his past as a member of the Benzini Brothers’ Most Spectacular Show on Earth during the Great Depression, the novel recounts a love story in a world in which love is a luxury few can afford.
Copies of the book are available in multiple formats at the Sequim Library, including regular and large print, downloadable e-book, audiobook on CDs, playaway and downloadable audio.

The event is intended for first-time homebuyers and those who have not purchased in the current market.
Information will include not only the home-purchasing process, but also what is available for lower-income buyers in the way of down-payment assistance, sweat equity and/or the community land trust model.
Instructors will include a lender, real estate professional and home inspector.
Participants will receive a certificate for use with Habitat for Humanity, Mutual Self Help and the Washington State House Key program.

Poodles featured
SEQUIM — Poodles are the July featured breed at the monthly “Meet the Breed” series at Best Friend Nutrition, 680 W. Washington St., from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
The public can learn more about this breed’s origins, temperament, health issues and care, and meet and pet Breanna (a toy) and Cayenne (a standard) as well as other poodles.
As co-sponsor of the “Meet the Breed” program, Champion Pet Foods will provide trial bags of Orijen and Acana dog foods as gifts to all attendees.
Poodles, originally bred in Germany as a type of water dog, are intelligent, active and elegant dogs that can excel in a variety of sports, including in agility, obedience, tracking, nose-work and herding, store personnel said.
More “Meet the Breed” programs are planned: “Therapy Dogs” on Aug. 18 and the “German Pinscher” dog Sept. 15.
All programs are on Saturdays from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

SEQUIM — Veteran Master Gardener Bill Wrobel will lead a walk through the Clallam County Master Gardener Woodcock Demonstration Garden at 2711 Woodcock Road at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Wrobel will provide advice to local gardeners on what needs to be done this month and how to perform selected tasks.
He also will discuss problems that can crop up this time of year.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Jefferson County 4-H Horse Program will host its annual Open Pre-Fair Horse Show at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 4907 Landes St., on Saturday and Sunday.
Performance classes will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, and Western games will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday.
Classes are $7 for performance and $6 for gaming classes.
High-point trophies will be given both days for adult, senior, intermediate and junior divisions.

Frank is a Port Townsend resident and University of Washington student.
She will discuss her global health research and experiences during a 10-week internship in Bolivia, focusing on how social and economic inequalities affect societal health and well-being.
Shelter celebration

Tour-goers can pick up tour maps at Power Trip Energy, 83 Denny Ave. in Port Townsend’s Glen Cove Industrial Park.
This year’s tour introduces the Solar Bike Tour Poker Run, where participants get a playing card for every tour site visited by bicycle before returning to Power Trip Energy to play their hand by 4 p.m.
Power Trip Energy will host an optional “Spin Your Meter Backwards” presentation at 10 a.m.
