PORT ANGELES — Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders will speak at a Peninsula Behavioral Health fundraiser today.
Reservations must be made by noon today for the 5 p.m. event at Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St.
Tickets are $100 per person or $750 for a table for eight.
Proceeds benefit Peninsula Behavioral Health’s services for adults, children and families.
The theme of the event and the emphasis of Elders’ address is “Education: A Key to a Healthy America.”
Elders was the first person in Arkansas to become board-certified in pediatric endocrinology.
She was the 16th surgeon general, the first African-American and only the second woman to head the U.S. Public Health Service.
Elders also is an expert on prevention of child abuse, teen pregnancy, domestic violence and substance abuse.

VideOlympics Saturday
PORT ANGELES — Vide-Olympics, a homegrown outdoor film festival starring the talent of local filmmakers, athletes and locations, will return to Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St., at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Admission will be $5 at the door.
All ages are welcome at Bar N9ne until 9 p.m.
Each submission is judged before the event by a panel of judges for technical merit, production values and “stoke” factor, i.e., how much a video makes the watcher want to get off the couch and get outdoors on the Olympic Peninsula.
In addition, there is an award for crowd favorites, so audience participation is mandatory.
More than $1,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded.
Proceeds go to the Hurricane Ridge Winter Sports Club.

Cat adoption
PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Humane Society is running a cat adoption special through Saturday.
Adoption fees for cats will be waived if the cat has been at the shelter longer than three months, is 3 years of age or older, or if an individual adopts three adult cats.
The shelter has a lot of cats to choose from at this time.
All adoptions include a spay or neuter, rabies vaccination, microchip and a complimentary vet check.

Pet microchips
PORT ANGELES — A low-cost microchip clinic for dogs and cats will be held at the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, 2105 W. U.S. Highway 101, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
The cost of a microchip at the clinic is $25.
Microchipping can help a pet be returned to its owner should it wander from home.
The chip is the size of a grain of rice and will remain implanted in the animal for its lifetime.
It is a relatively painless procedure and takes minutes to complete.
The clinic is being held in conjunction with Chip Your Pet Month and National Pet Week.

Zen retreat set
PORT ANGELES — NO Sangha, a Zen meditation group that has existed in Port Angeles for more than 16 years, will hold a Zazenkai — a one-day zen retreat — on Saturday.

Alternated zazen (seated meditation), kinhin (walking meditation) and private, individual instruction are available.
Silent coffee/tea breaks and a vegetarian soup and bread lunch will be offered.
A Sutra, or chanting service, will be held at 10 a.m.

Spruce Railroad walk
PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Explorers will walk the Spruce Railroad Trail on Saturday.
Walkers will meet at the Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 W. U.S. Highway 101, at 9 a.m. before heading out to the trail.
A carpool will leave the Sequim QFC at 8:30 a.m.
Walkers can choose from 3.72- or 7.45-mile routes.
Mostly following the old abandoned railroad grade, the walk skirts two tunnels that are dangerous to enter and offers views of Lake Crescent and a host of other landmarks.
Parts of the trail are rocky and sometimes a bit muddy. Baby joggers can be used with difficulty. Wheelchairs are not recommended.
No pets are permitted on the hike.

Flower box benefit
PORT ANGELES — A filled cedar flower box benefit for The Answer For Youth will be held in front of Angeles Furniture, 1114 E. First St., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Flower boxes are homemade and filled with flowers donated by Linda Moffett of Angel Crest Gardens and Wayne Roedell.
The cost is $25.
The Answer For Youth is a nonprofit agency that helps at-risk and homeless youths and young adults.
‘Kelly’s Stout’ on tap
PORT ANGELES — The North Olympic Brewers Guild and Barhop Brewing Co. have teamed up for a pro-am brewing event at Barhop Taproom, 110 N. Laurel St., today at 5 p.m.
Barhop Brewing and members of the Brewers Guild came together in November with the idea of bringing homebrew recipes to the public.
From India pale ales to marzens and stouts, 18 different beers were submitted.
The beers were judged for marketability by Bill Sproules, owner and operator of Olympic Brewing Supplies in Bremerton.
“Kelly’s Stout,” from the homebrewing team of Mic Sager and Kelly Raymond, was chosen from the many different beers.
Sager and Raymond recently visited Barhop Brewery, with proprietor Tom Curry on hand, to brew Kelly’s Stout.
Barhop Taproom will tap the first keg of Kelly’s Stout at 5 p.m. today.
Barhop may feature beer recipes from other Brewers Guild homebrewers in the months ahead.
Spain trip fundraiser
PORT ANGELES — A car wash benefit will be held at the 76 Gas Station, corner of East Front Street and North Chambers Street, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Proceeds will help third- and fourth-year Spanish students in Port Angeles High School’s Spanish teacher Renee Lancaster’s classes raise funds for a supervised, 11-day trip to Spain in June.
Dessert fundraiser
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Farmers Market will host its second annual Decadent Dessert Silent Auction and Fundraiser on Saturday.
The auction runs from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will be set up in the stage area of The Gateway transit center at Front and Lincoln streets.
The event will raise funds for ongoing market operations.
Desserts have been donated by local chefs, market board members and market supporters, said market manager Cynthia Warne.
The timing of the event is intended specifically to offer people in the community the opportunity to not only support general market operations, but also to bring a handcrafted treat to their Mother’s Day gatherings, she said.
“Every mom deserves something sweet on Mother’s Day,” Warne said.

Holocaust remembered
PORT ANGELES — “And Then They Came for Me: Remembering Anne Frank,” a Port Angeles High School-produced multimedia event, continues today and Saturday.
The curtain rises for the play, which opened Tuesday, at 7 p.m. each night at the Port Angeles High School auditorium, 304 E. Park Ave.
In “Remembering,” a blend of documentary video and live performance, the stories are told of concentration camp survivors such as Ed Silverberg — Anne Frank’s first boyfriend — and Eva Schloss, as well as the stories of their families.
Tickets at the door will be $7 for general admission and $6 for students.
Members of the school’s Thespian Society, Lovall’s after-school theater program, have rehearsed this spring production for 10 weeks.
Play-goers will see a videotaped interview with the real Ed Silverberg, who survived the Holocaust, alongside an on-stage portrayal of him by high school student Jacob Woods.
Eva Schloss, another of Anne’s teenage friends, is likewise on the screen in an interview and portrayed on the stage by student Hope Chamberlain.

Book discussion slated
SEQUIM — A Map of the World, by Jane Hamilton, will be discussed at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., at 3 p.m. Saturday.
The book is described as “a vivid human drama of guilt and betrayal.”
The Goodwins — Howard, Alice and their little girls, Emma and Claire — live on a dairy farm in rural Wisconsin.
Their peaceful life is shattered one day when a neighbor’s 2-year-old daughter drowns in the Goodwins’ pond while under Alice’s care.
Alice is arrested. As a child, she had designed her own map of the world to find her bearings. Now, as an adult, she must find her way again through a maze of lies, doubt and ill will.

Master Gardener walks
SEQUIM — Veteran Master Gardeners Judy English, Jeanette Stehr-Green and Bill Wrobel will lead a walk through the Clallam County Master Gardener Demonstration Garden at 2711 Woodcock Road at 10 a.m. Saturday.
They will demonstrate what is happening in local vegetable, flower and ornamental gardens, and provide timely advice to local gardeners.
In the monthly walks, English, Wrobel and Stehr-Green identify plants and varieties that grow well in the Pacific Northwest, remind gardeners what chores need to be performed each month in a typical home garden, demonstrate how to perform gardening tasks and answer questions and diagnose problems.
The sessions are part of the Class Act at Woodcock Garden educational series.
The walks are held the second Saturday of each month through October.
Wrobel and Stehr-Green will be joined by other Master Gardeners with expertise in growing specific ornamental plants, fruits, vegetables or herbs.
In addition to these walks, the Class Act Series will present more relevant gardening issues two other Saturdays each month.
Wrobel has been a Master Gardener since 1984, Stehr-Green has been a Master Gardener since 2003, and English joined the program in 2005.
Together, they have more than 80 years of gardening experience in their own gardens.

CLALLAM BAY — The Clallam Bay Comicon group will host a “How to Make a Mini-Comic” workshop Saturday.
The workshop will be at 1 p.m. at the Three Sisters of Clallam Art Gallery, otherwise known as “the green building at the west end of Clallam Bay.”
Attendees will learn to make and publish the little, hand-built books that those in the drawn-book industry use to launch publishing products.
