WEEKEND: Hatters go mad at high tea

PORT ANGELES — The third-floor ballroom of the Port Angeles Elks Naval Lodge will be transformed into a Wonderland on Saturday, when the Elks host the Mad Hatter’s High Tea Party.

Doors at the lodge at 131 E. First St. will open at 12:30 p.m. for those who want to decorate a hat.

Supplies and hat blanks will be provided, although participants are welcome to bring decorating materials of their own.

Tea service will begin at 1 p.m.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. The tea is suitable for children 8 and older.

Proceeds go to the Tall Elks Fund, which provides physical therapy for needy children.

All that high tea entails

A full High Tea meal will be served. The menu will include praline scones, sausage rolls, four kinds of tea sandwiches, fruit salad, strawberry tarts and chocolate eclairs.

When guests get off the elevator, they will walk through a large rabbit hole to emerge into a brightly decorated room that echoes the topsy-turvy chaotic tea party described by Lewis Carroll in Alice In Wonderland.

Custom-painted teapots will sit atop bright tablecloths with an eclectic mix of tables and chairs of different heights and shapes to create the look and feel of Wonderland.

Paper lanterns will fly overhead, while large portraits of Alice, the Queen of Hearts and the Cheshire Cat line the walls.

Entertainment will include a humorous recitation from one of Lewis Carroll’s books, a performance featuring “White Rabbit,” a musical number by Nikki Adams, as well as the most Outlandish-Outstanding Hat Contest, raffles and a 50-50 drawing.

Advance tickets can be purchased at the Elks Office or over the phone at 360-457-3355 during office hours.
