PORT TOWNSEND — With music, George Rezendes has said, you cannot rake in a whole lot of money — at least around here.
“But you can build community,” he believes.
And this Sunday, he and his ToolShed Trio, plus two other local bands, will set out to do that.
Rezendes and friends, plus Maybe Later and the Low Ones, will give a free concert outdoors at the Pourhouse, 2231 Washington St., to introduce Homeward Bound Community Land Trust to East Jefferson County.
Homeward Bound seeks to give low-income families the chance to own their own homes through the land-trust process: placing a property in trust and then selling the houses to qualifying families.
The organization is well-established in Clallam County, said Homeward Bound board member Peter Bonyun.
“We are just now finishing up the work on our fifth home in Port Angeles,” he said.
“The family is hoping to move in before the end of July.”
Along with enjoying live music from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. Sunday, residents can learn more about the growth of Homeward Bound, which has just won a $5,000 matching grant from the Lorber Family Foundation.
The gap between wages and home prices is making it harder all the time for young, working families to own homes, Bonyun said, but “the community land-trust model is a very smart local solution.”
New lineup on tap
Rezendes, for his part, promises a new lineup of musicians at the Pourhouse for the ToolShed’s 7:30 p.m. slot Sunday: Jesse Watson on congas, Russ Lowrey on drums and bassist Russ Clarke beside steel-guitar man Dave Meis.
Pourhouse beverages and food from Thai 1-2-3, Jordini’s and the Muskan Indian Restaurant will be available, and table tennis and petanque tournaments are part of the plan.
“I promise it will be a warm, sunny day,” quipped Rezendes, the ToolShed’s singer and guitarist.
