WEEKEND: Fall fills senses during Art Walk in Sequim

SEQUIM — The color theme for the November First Friday Art Walk tonight is a flavorful one.

We’re talking brown, as in chocolate, mocha, espresso, cinnamon. And, of course, turkey gravy.

So as with every art walk this year, participants are invited to dress and express this color theme any way they like. It’s all part of the free, self-directed tour of downtown Sequim from 5 p.m. till 8 p.m. every first Friday.

Venues participating in the art walk include cafes, galleries and shops, and many offer refreshments and the chance to chat with local artists. Among tonight’s highlights:

■ Rainshadow Coffee Roasting Co., 157 W. Cedar St., is displaying artist Jeff Tocher’s “Impressions of Sequim,” a show of paintings from 20 years here. Also, at 6 p.m. singer-songwriter Eileen Meyer, a Sequim resident recently transplanted from Santa Fe, N.M., and guitarist Larry Mitchell will give a free concert.

■ The Museum & Arts Center, 175 W. Cedar St., has unveiled “Sequim Reflections,” the new exhibition blending Sequim history with artists’ visions. Historic buildings, from the Angiuli barn to the Clallam Co-op grain tower downtown, are among the subjects in the show. Also at the museum: a new John Wayne Marina history exhibit, replete with a life-size cutout of Wayne. Art walkers are invited to come have their photos taken with it, enjoy refreshments and meet “Sequim Reflections’” artists.

■ The Blue Whole Gallery, 129 W. Washington St., is featuring painters Karin Anderson and Susan Martin Spar. While Anderson is known for her expressionist paintings, collages and found-object assemblages, Spar specializes in the still life and the human figure.

“The subject is immaterial,” she says. “It doesn’t matter because it’s the light that I’m painting.” Spar calls herself a romantic, and loves landscapes for their grandeur — but also is drawn to the still life, which she says reminds her of the beauty in everyday living.

■ Heather Creek, 122 W. Washington St., is holding a fundraiser during tonight’s art walk for Sequim Pre-Three, a nonprofit program for children age 10 months to 31/2 years old. For details see www.pre3.org.

■ The Red Rooster Grocery, 1341/2 W. Washington St., features prints and ceramics by Donna Standerwick of Laughing Loon studio.

■ Pacific Mist Books, 121 W. Washington St., and owner Vickie Maples are hosting a first anniversary party with Stafford’s hand-dipped chocolates, Boots Find a Home author Carol Hervin, refreshments from Cameron’s Cafe and art by Jean Wyatt.

■ R&T Crystals and Beads, 158 E. Bell St., has jewelry demonstrations by Paulette Hill and D’Ann Gonzales tonight.

■ Wind Rose Cellars, 155-B W. Cedar St., blends wine tasting, music by Bill Volmut and a display of art by Sallie and Randy Radock.

■ Doodlebugs, 138 W. Washington St., opens its Creative Café Art Bar from 4:30 p.m. till 6:30 p.m. so passers-by can drop in and work on projects.

■ Prairie Springs Assisted Living, 680 W. Prairie St., invites visitors for desserts and an art show by the North Olympic Watercolorists Group.
