SEQUIM — Tonight is opening night for the free series of outdoor concerts behind the Sequim Library, and the Olympic Express big band is ready with “In the Mood,” “Orange Colored Sky” and maybe even “Makin’ Whoopee.”
Show time is 6 p.m. for the 17-piece outfit, whose vocalist these days is Teresa Pierce of Port Angeles. Listeners are invited to enjoy the music from the bleachers, or bring picnic blankets or lawn chairs for the grassy spot out back of the library at 630 N. Sequim Ave.
With its healthy horn section — trumpeters Brittany Brabant and Joey Lazzaro, saxophonists Steve Lingle and Kevin MacCartney to name a few — the Olympic Express travels from swing to rock ‘n’ roll to Motown and boogie-woogie. “Leroy Brown,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “I’m Beginning to See the Light,” “Tuxedo Junction,” “The Rose,” “Two O’Clock Jump,” “Hot Cha Cha Cha,” “Green Onions,” “We’ll Be Together Again” and “America the Beautiful” are among the numbers the big band dishes out.
This first-of-the-season event will run about two hours on the Sequim Library’s outdoor stage, which has new lighting and seating funded by the Friends of Sequim Library.
