WEEKEND: AAUW to present annual scholarship

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend branch of the American Association of University Women will present its Elmira K. Beyer Scholarship and other financial awards Saturday.

The meeting will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2333 San Juan Ave., Port Townsend.

The group will award $1,500 to graduating seniors from Chimacum and Port Townsend high schools.

The funds for these awards are generated from Kitchen Tour proceeds and targeted donations.

There were 20 completed applications for the Elmira K. Beyer Scholarship this year, with applicants ranging in age from 18 to 55.

Full tuition

The winner of the Beyer scholarship will receive an award of full tuition up to $7,500.

The money comes from the Scholarship Endowment Fund.

Awards of $1,500 scholarships will be provided to two Beyer scholarship finalists.

A special one-time scholarship also will be awarded this year in memory of branch member Liz Mullensky, who lost her life to cancer last summer.

Her family and friends, including many branch members who came to know Mullensky during her short time in Port Townsend, donated the funds for the award.

Mullensky’s husband, Steve, will present the award.
