JOYCE — A retired Clallam County engineer and author will speak about the Spruce Production Division at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Clallam County Historical Society/North Olympic History Center is sponsoring the presentation by Steve Hauff at the Crescent Bay Lions Clubhouse, 181 Holly Hill Road, Joyce. The audience is limited to 50 people.
Admission is $20 for members of the Clallam County Historical Society and $25 for non-members.
Attendees will receive a copy of Hauff’s new book, “The Spruce Production Division in Clallam County.”
This year marks the centennial of the end of World War I. Clallam County played a significant role during the war, according to organizers.
Hauff’s talk will present the cast of characters and events surrounding the Spruce Division and its impact on logging, railroad construction and life at the camps and in Port Angeles.
His book chronicles the operations of the Spruce Division in Clallam County.
Included are sections covering the construction of a 37-mile “impossible” railroad in just six months, mill construction and private operations which utilized Spruce Division personnel.
The volume includes more than 100 photos, comprehensive maps and first-hand narratives to describe the project.
Hauff is the author and co-author of numerous books and articles about railroads.
