Spring bulbs topic of lecture Thursday in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Master Gardener Jan Danford will discuss how to select and plant healthy spring garden bulbs at noon Thursday.

The lecture, the next installment of Washington State University Clallam County Extension’s “Green Thumb Garden Tips” series, will be in the county commissioners’ meeting room (160) at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St.

Review of history

Danford will begin her lecture with a brief review of the history and popularity of bulbs, after which she will explain the difference between bulbs, corms, rhizomes and tubers, as well as each type’s preferred planting method.

Tips for selecting healthy bulbs, planting for artistic effects and a demonstration of how to plant a pot in layers to yield a variety of blossoms also will be covered.

26 years teaching

Recognized as the Master Gardener Intern of the Year in 2012 and named Clallam County Master Gardener of the Year in 2016, Danford has 26 years of teaching experience.

She also chairs the operating committee at the Master Gardener Woodcock Demonstration Garden, coordinates the Boys & Girls Club Garden Club in Sequim and participates in its Youth Enrichment Program.
