SEQUIM — The 107th edition of the Sequim Irrigation Festival, the state’s oldest continuing festival, begins today.
The festival was started May 1, 1896, when residents of the valley and surrounding communities came together to witness the opening of the first irrigation line near what now is the intersection of Old Olympic Highway and Sequim-Dungeness Way.
The parade on May 11 is the highlight of the festival. Irrigation Festival Queen Jennifer Horton and princesses Cortney Obregon, Jennifer Lamb and Maggie Hooker will show off the city of Sequim float.
Activities run today through Sunday, then continue Thursday through Sunday next week.
This week’s two-day arts event is located on Seal and Cedar streets on Saturday and Sunday.

9 a.m. – 5 p.m. — 39th annual Valley Garden Club “Shower of Flowers” standard flower show, plant sale and silver tea, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave.
10 a.m. – 5 p.m. — 27th annual Bonsai Society Show, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 595 N. Fifth Ave.
Noon — Official festival opening Turning on the Ditch, Dungeness River.
5:30 – 7:30 p.m. — First Friday art opening, Blue Whole Gallery, 129 W. Washington St.
Saturday
9 a.m. – noon — Goldwing motorcycle display, Sequim High School football field, 300 W. Fir St.

Touch-A-Truck Kids Fair, Battelle touch tanks, Valentine’s performing pigs, face-painting, glue-in, cup stackers, raptor center, bird feeder building, petting zoo, puppets art corner, entertainment for all ages. Sequim High School football field, 300 W. Fir St.
2 p.m. — Boat parade and annual opening day of boating season, Sequim Bay Yacht Club at John Wayne Marina, 2577 West Sequim Bay Road.
2 – 2:30 p.m. — Award ceremony for Math Olympiad at Sequim Middle School cafeteria, 300 W. Hendrickson Road.
7 p.m. — Street dance to Fat Chance, Cedar and Seal streets.
8 p.m. — Goldwing motorcycle twilight parade.
