Boat parade, bagpipes set for kickoff on May 1

SEQUIM — The Sequim Bay Yacht Club will celebrate the Opening Day of boating season on May 1 with free rides, a boat parade and bagpipe music.

Community members can get rides on club members’ boats between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at John Wayne Marina, 2577 W. Sequim Bay Road, on a first-come, first-served basis from the rowing dock at the north end of the marina. Life jackets will be provided for adults and children.

At 2:30 p.m., the marina flagpole will be the site of a flag ceremony, blessing of the fleet, “last call” honors for yacht club members who have died in the past year, and other special presentations.

At 3 p.m. bagpiper Bob McMichael will play on Pitship Point as member boats parade in Sequim Bay, with Mud Bay and the point ideal viewing points from shore.

Those interested in learning more about yacht club programs — including learn-to-sail and learn-to-row courses, social events and presentations open to the public, and an annual fundraising campaign for Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County — can hear from club members (cruisers, sailors, rowers and social members) at an open house set for 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the club room, on the north end of the marina building. COVID health protocols apply.
