Saturday workshop touches on growing plants in small spaces

SEQUIM — Clallam County Master Gardeners Bob Cain and Bev Morrow and coordinator Lorrie Hamilton will discuss how to successfully grow a vegetable or ornamental garden in a limited growing space during a workshop Saturday.

The talk, part of the “Saturday in the Garden” lecture series, will be from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road, Sequim.

The workshop is free, but donations for printing costs are appreciated. No preregistration is needed.

The workshop will be separated into several sections.

The first section will concentrate on container gardening for patios, decks or other small spaces.

Attendees will rotate through stations designed to give them a better understanding of how to successfully grow a variety of plants in containers.

The next piece will focus on vertical gardening. Morrow will discuss methods of training plants to grow upward. She also will highlight vertical growing containers that help save space in the garden.

Cain will then give a presentation on square-foot gardening, a method of intensely growing a variety of vegetables in a grid system.

He will follow his talk with a demonstration on pruning fruit trees as espaliers. This two-dimensional training system allows homeowners with a small garden to still enjoy the bounty from an orchard.

The workshop will conclude with a question/answer section in which attendees can talk one-on-one with Master Gardeners to create their small-space garden and to gain advice on their specific garden challenges.
