Relay for Life events gear up in Clallam, Jefferson

SEQUIM — Port Angeles and Sequim are joining forces this year to raise money for cancer research in a Clallam County Relay for Life event July 28-29, while teams in Jefferson County and Forks prepare for their own events.

The joint Port Angeles-Sequim Relay for Life will be from 3 p.m. Friday, July 28, to noon Saturday, July 29, at Pioneer Memorial Park, 387 E. Washington St., Sequim.

Jefferson County

Next weekend will be the Relay for Life of Jefferson County from 2 p.m. July 8 to 10 a.m. July 9 at H.J. Carroll Park, 9884 state Highway 19, Chimacum.

Teams in Jefferson County have raised $10,652 toward their $20,000 goal.

After an opening ceremony, the Jefferson County event will have a survivors lap and dinner, as well as a caregivers lap. A luminaria ceremony honoring those who have died of cancer is set for 10 p.m.

Forks relay

Relay for Life of Forks is set for Aug. 4 at the Rainforest Arts Center, 35 N. Forks Ave.

At the Clallam County event, survivors will be honored with the opening lap and dinner at 6 p.m. The luminaria ceremony will be at 10 p.m.

Entertainment, games, vendors and live music are planned.

More than 200 area residents are expected to attend, said Katie Tormohlen, American Cancer Society spokeswoman.

Laps around track

During Relay for Life events, members of each team take turns walking or running around the track or path. Teams participate in fundraising in the months leading up to the event.

Funds raised help the American Cancer Society provide free information and support for people facing the disease today, as well as fund cancer research that will help protect future generations.

“Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the society has invested more than $4.6 billion in research since 1946 and have funded more than 20,000 scientists at more than 1,000 institutions nationwide,” Tormohlen said in a news release.

Local sponsors include Olympic Medical Center, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, the city of Sequim, The Landing mall, 7 Cedars Casino, First Federal bank, RE/MAX Evergreen and Smugglers Landing.
