Regional 4-H groups offer citizenship project

Teens gearing up for 2021 Know Your Government conference

The 4-H groups in Clallam, Jefferson, Kitsap, San Juan and Whatcom counties are offering the We Connect Global Citizenship project for youths ages 13-18.

This virtual project will be held from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. every other Tuesday over Zoom beginning Jan. 26 through late May.

We Connect Global Citizenship is a project in which teens explore how to think globally while acting locally.

Objectives include increased intercultural and interpersonal communication and gaining an understanding of oneself and who one is in relation to others.

Zoom sessions will be interactive and will allow opportunities for teens in all five counties to connect.

Those interested are encouraged to attend an informational Zoom meeting from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5; register at tinyurl.com/y6hbcld8.

We Connect is free to teens already enrolled in 4-H; the enrollment fee for Clallam County 4-H is $25, and scholarships are available. Space is limited.

Clallam County 4-H, Jefferson County 4-H and Kitsap County 4-H are coordinating to form a team for this year’s Know Your Government conference.

Normally only for high schoolers, this year it will be open to youths grades 7-12. Pre-conference meetings will be held over Zoom on Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. beginning Thursday, Jan. 7, culminating in a virtual conference on Presidents’ Day Weekend.

Registration for the first meeting is tinyurl.com/yx93jtgc. Registration for Know Your Government is $40.

Know Your Government is WSU/4-H’s annual civics program. Working on a four-year cycle, the program rotates topics between the judicial system, the legislative system, politics and the media and elections.

This year, program organizers are working on the judicial system with the theme “The Judicial System – Unmasked.”

The conference will include five pre-conference meetings Thursday nights learning about the court system both in Washington state and the nation while interacting with participants from Clallam, Jefferson and Kitsap counties.

On Feb. 13-14, the group will join other participants from across the state to host a mock trial.
