PORT TOWNSEND – Looking for something fun to do over Labor Day weekend? Historic Port Townsend is putting out the welcome mat for the “last blast of summer” which the downtown Main Street program is calling ParTy in PT.
In addition to sidewalk sales by shops and stores throughout the business district, there will be free music and family activities, al fresco dining, horse-drawn wagon rides with PT Livery, and sidewalk history tours.
Events will start with a two-decade tradition in Port Townsend: The “family portrait” Saturday, Sept. 1, at 10 a.m. in front of the newly renovated City Hall at the corner of Water and Madison streets.
The 115-year-old building, which also houses the Jefferson County Historical Society Museum, reopened last November following a $3 million renovation.
It remains the state’s oldest active City Hall building.
And now it becomes the setting for the 2007 Port Townsend “family portrait,” to be taken by David Conklin and Elizabeth Becker, owner of Seaport Photography, from a boom lift high overhead.
Bring your family, dress colorfully and be part of this historic portrait.
The Port Townsend Main Street Program will provide a free gift for children (while supplies last), said Main Street Executive Director Mari Mullen.
Posters of the photo will be printed on the same day and available uptown at The Printery, 631 Tyler St., for $10 each.
Main Street board members will take advance orders prior to Saturday’s photo shoot.
Immediately after the pictures are taken, the Jefferson County Historical Society Museum will offer free admission Saturday.
The ParTy in PT music schedule offers free outdoor music at several locations.
There is a youth music concert outside on the lawn at the American Legion Hall, 209 Monroe St., from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. featuring several Port Townsend bands – Captain Incognito, Eclectric and Polished Opinion.
The band members of Captain Incognito (Conor Sisk, Kyle Hove and Nico Janssen) were recently signed to a record label.
Horse-drawn wagon rides through the historic district will be offered for a fee Saturday and Sunday.
