PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Fine Arts Center and Feiro Marine Life Center will cohost two programs this week: one for children and one for adults.
First up is the workshop, which includes an art project, for kids ages 7 to 12. This class, from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, will explore local water systems at the PAFAC, 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd. Tickets are $25 for PAFAC members and $30 for nonmembers, while all participants must register in advance at PAFAC.org.
For adults, the center will present “Civic Minds + Creative Hearts,” a program inspired by its current art show, at 6 p.m. Thursday.
“Community members are invited to join for an interactive evening of art, science and education as the PAFAC brings its current exhibition, ‘Science Stories,’ to life through the fascinating research happening here on the Olympic Peninsula,” PAFAC staffer Rachel Storck wrote in a news release.
“Science Stories,” on display at the arts center, has brought together Pacific Northwest scientists and book artists to create works that both interpret science and tell a story. One of the pieces, “Flow of Water” by Rochelle Gandour-Rood and An Gates, inspired Thursday’s program, which focuses on local water systems.
“How does the health of our waterways impact our health? Once we started thinking about these things in our own community, it was a clear path to collaborate with the Feiro Marine Life Center,” said PAFAC Executive Director Christine Loewe.
Attendees will learn about the ecological vitality of local waterways from Olympic National Park coastal ecologist Steve Fradkin. He’ll provide an overview of current watershed monitoring projects and will share his perspective on the shifting ecosystem.
As part of Thursday’s event, staff from the Feiro center and the PAFAC will host interactive pop-up art and science stations about the local watershed. Attendees will also have the opportunity to draft a love letter to a glacier in honor of the national park’s Terminus Project. Participants may add their artwork and words on a postcard that will become part of the Terminus archive.
Food and drink will be available for purchase from Fogtown Coffee on Thursday evening.
