PORT ANGELES — It’s looking like one of those overflowing weekends, with outings and activities and food and drink and music.
Then there’s swapping and dancing — and as the creative types say, “rejoicing in the Earth through art.”
And the Klallam Earth Day Beach Cleanup Challenge, to stretch from 5 a.m. Saturday until 5 p.m. Sunday, begins with beach cleanup parties of volunteers Saturday morning and progresses into The Landing mall Saturday afternoon for the piece de resistance, the Trashion Show.
The event is open to all ages, said challenge organizer Phil Lusk, with check-in at 4 p.m. and the show and people’s choice voting for cash prizes at 5 p.m.
“Find your inner trashionista” is Lusk’s call to action on this, to which he adds that first prize is $100, second prize $75 and third $50.
Richard Stephens, also an organizer — as well as an advertising representative for the Peninsula Daily News — has predicted he will wear a tailcoat made of a trash bag, replete with a collar studded with hypodermic needles, for “a biohazard look.”
Saturday’s Trashion Show, though, is just one among the array of Earth Day events. Here’s the rest of the schedule.
On Saturday:
— Beach cleanups in and around Port Angeles: Sign up today by phoning 360-457-4407, by visiting www.KlallamEarthDay.com or by picking up a late-registration packet anytime after 5 a.m. Saturday at Celestial Espresso, outside The Landing mall at 115 E. Railroad Ave.
Registered participants will receive $5 food tokens for the volunteer appreciation party at The Landing later Saturday.
— Peabody Creek cleanup at 8 a.m.; to join the party, phone the Feiro Marine Life Center today at 360-417-6254 or email ChristinaR@FeiroMarineLifeCenter.org.
— The Earth Day swap meet, open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the north atrium of The Landing mall.
— Earth Day exhibits and a U.S. Coast Guard boat display on and around City Pier and the Arthur D. Feiro Marine Life Center from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
— Beach cleanup volunteer party with food vendors in The Landing mall’s south atrium from 11 a.m. until about 5 p.m.
— Nir Barnea of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration updates visitors on Japanese tsunami debris at 3:15 p.m. in The Landing mall’s south atrium.
— “Rejoicing in the Earth through Art,” an exhibition of sculpture, paintings, woodwork and mixed-media creations, in The Landing’s south atrium from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., with people’s choice balloting and award presentations at 3:30 p.m.
— Music and dancing in The Landing’s south atrium with Luck of the Draw from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., then Jason Mogi and Paul Stehr-Green from 2:15 p.m. on through the afternoon.
— Trashion Show check-in at 4 p.m. in The Landing’s south atrium; show from 5:15 p.m. until 6 p.m.
— The city of Port Angeles honors Landing mall owner and Klallam Earth Day sponsor Paul Cronauer for his contributions to the community at large, in the mall’s south atrium.
— Danny O’Keefe and Joel Tepp give a benefit concert for the Feiro Marine Life Center at Wine on the Waterfront, upstairs in The Landing mall, at 8 p.m.; tickets are $40 at the wine bar, 360-565-8466, or www.BrownPaperTickets.com.
On Sunday:
— “Rejoicing in the Earth” art show, open inside The Landing mall from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.; exhibition will stay up through April 30.
— Earth Day swap meet from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. inside The Landing.
For lovers of the beaches west of Port Angeles, the North Olympic Land Trust is organizing two waterfront cleanups and a brief tour of the Pysht Conservation Area. Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at Crescent School’s parking lot in Joyce, then carpool to work at Murdock Beach and Pillar Point County Park. Each volunteer will receive a $5 token for food at the volunteer appreciation event at The Landing in Port Angeles.
On Sunday, the land trust will host a work party from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Siebert Creek Conservation Area. In addition to tackling as much Scotch broom as possible, participants will go on a tour of the property, which is at the end of Siebert Creek Road off U.S. Highway 101 between Port Angeles and Sequim. Tools, bags and snacks will be provided, and RSVPs are much appreciated but not required.
