PORT ANGELES — Veteran Master Gardener Muriel Nesbitt will explain how to make well-informed garden pest management choices that increase productivity and protect the environment at noon today.
She will speak in Room 160, the county commissioners meeting room at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
This presentation is part of the Green Thumb education series sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners.
Nesbitt will discuss integrated pest management — a strategy to prevent and suppress insects, slugs, plant disease and weeds with minimum impact to human health, the environment and beneficial non-target organisms.
She will help home gardeners distinguish pests from beneficial organisms. She also will describe methods of pest management that are intended to minimize the introduction of poisons into the environment while maintaining a garden and emphasize monitoring ways to use less chemical weed and insect killers.
Nesbitt, who earned a doctorate in genetics from the University of Washington, retired from teaching biology at the University of California-San Diego.
She directed the Clallam County Master Gardener program from 2009 to 12. She is a frequent speaker on sustainable growing and instructor for the Master Gardener intern training.
The Master Gardener Green Thumb Garden Tips education series continues the second and fourth Thursday of each month, from noon to 1 p.m.
