North Olympic Peninsula outdoor concerts this week (**beginning today!**)

Pack up a picnic dinner, grab your lawn chair or a blanket — and don’t forget your sunglasses if it’s sunny — and head to family-friendly outdoor community concerts in Jefferson and Clallam counties this week.

Here’s the schedule:

SEQUIM

*Today, at 3 p.m. — The Sequim City Band continues its once-a-month performances in the James Center for the Performing Arts amphitheater at the outdoor James Center for the Performing Arts amphitheater at 563 N. Rhodefer Road, next to Carrie Blake Park.

The concert, which is free, will feature Matt Grey, a 2009 Sequim City Band scholarship winner and Sequim

High graduate, performing “Blue Topaz,” a concerto for bass trombone.

Also performing will be scholarship recipients Naomi Fosket (2007) and Jodi Chamberlin (2010).

Olympic Express Big Band will perform separately at 2 p.m.

The Sequim City Band performs on the third Sunday of the month at 3 p.m. through September.

*Tuesday, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. — MLR (multigenerational classic rock-n-roll).

Free. This is part of the city of Sequim’s Music in the Park series at the James Center for the Performing Arts amphitheater (address above) every Tuesday through Aug. 31

Next Music in the Park concert, on Aug. 24 — Olympic Trombone Orchestra (standards, jazz).

PORT ANGELES

*Wednesday, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. — Super Trees (rock ‘n’ roll; see ad on Page C6 today).

Free. This is part of the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Concert on the Pier series.

Concerts are every Wednesday through Sept. 8 on Port Angeles City Pier. Vendors sell food.

City Pier is a no-smoking, alcohol-free environment.

Some chairs are available for the disabled and early arrivals.

Next free concert, on Aug. 25 — Sequimarimba (marimba-centric music of Africa).

*Next Sunday, Aug. 22, at 4 p.m. — Jim Valley, a lead guitarist and vocalist for Paul Revere and the Raiders, will perform a benefit concert for The Answer For Youth at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22.

The concert will be held at the Port Angeles City Pier bandstand.

The concert is open to all ages, and admission is by donation.

The concert is presented by Unity of the Olympics, and proceeds will support The Answer for Youth, “a nonprofit organization providing emotional and spiritual support for street-wise youth.”

PORT TOWNSEND

*Thursday, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. — Solbird (R&B).

Free. This is part of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce’s summer Concert on the Dock series every Thursday through Sept. 2 at the end of Water Street across from the Northwest Maritime Center (431 Water St.).

Next free concert, on Aug. 26 — Delta Rays (groovy dance music).

MARROWSTONE ISLAND

*Saturday, at 3 p.m. — Port Townsend Summer Band (a mixture of concert favorites and marches).

This is part of the Fort Flagler State Park summer concert series.

Admission is free, but a $5 donation is suggested.

The concert is in the Battery Bankhead amphitheater at Fort Flagler, located at the end of Marrowstone Island.

Follow the signs in the park to the battery.

Next concert (final in the summer series), 3 p.m. Sept. 11 — Navy Band Northwest’s Big Band “Cascade”

CONCERT FOR CHARITY

*Saturday, 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. — Olympic Cellars winery’s monthlong Saturday Summer Concert Series for charity continues with Haywire (North Olympic Peninsula band with mix of classical rock and upbeat country).

This will be a benefit for the Jet Set Soroptimists’ Girls’ Scholarship Fund.

The outdoor concert will take place on the winery grounds, 255410 U.S. Highway 101, between Port Angeles and Sequim.

Bring a picnic dinner and lawn chairs; winery seating fills quickly.

Beverages will be available for sale.

Final concert of the series on Aug. 28 — Handful of Luvin’ (Seattle band, an “eccentric blend of folk-rock, reggae and world rhythms”) as a benefit for the North Olympic Land Trust and Friends of the Fields.
