North Olympic Library System’s summer reading program begins Friday

PORT ANGELES — The North Olympic Library System will begin its Summer Reading Program on Friday.

This year’s theme is “Read, Renew, Repeat.”

The annual program offers activities for all ages.

Central to the program is the summer reading challenge.

Participants in the reading challenge can read, or be read to, to win prizes, including a limited edition 2024 Summer Reading Program T-shirt.

Sign up for the challenge at www.nols.org/srp, at branch libraries or at the Bookmobile, then track your reading from Friday through Aug. 24.

Reading for 20 minutes or more counts as a reading day.

Read for 30 days to pick up the Summer Reading Challenge T-shirt, designed by local artist Daria Hunt, and earn entry into the grand prize drawing.

An additional 30 days of reading earns a second entry into the drawing.

Grand prize winners can select a $100 gift card to a local book store or restaurant or a LEGO set up to $100 in value.

Other events for kids include the Reptile Man, Storytime and weekly Discovery Club activities.

Tweens and teens can catch workshops for songwriting, cartoon drawing and making video games.

Adults are welcome too, with activities that include concerts, workshops on beekeeping, meditation, composting and Zumba.

Kids who don’t read during the summer can lose up to a third of what they learned in the previous school year, according to a library system press release.

The Summer Reading Program provides a way for families to help keep kids engaged, prevent the summer slide of learning loss and develop a lifelong love of reading.

The Summer Reading Program is generously supported by Friends of the Library groups at all four North Olympic library branches.

For more information, call the library at 360-417-8500, email discover@nols.org or visit www.nols.org.
