SEQUIM — A lavish evening of song and handbells titled “Music With a Mission” is set for tonight.
The Peninsula Singers, under the baton of Dewey Ehling; the Glad Tidings Handbell Ringers; and the Altissimo Flute Choir will play at 7 p.m. in the Sequim Community Church main sanctuary, 950 N. Fifth Ave.
Admission is $10 per person or $20 per family, with tickets sold at the door.
Proceeds will support the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula, which provide low-cost after-school and summertime activities for hundreds of children and teens in Sequim and Port Angeles.
Tonight’s program is a romantic and lighthearted one.
The Altissimo Flute Choir, led by Sharon Snel and composed of 12 flutists plus a percussionist, guitarist and string bassist, will play the “Pink Panther” theme and a fantasy on “Flight of the Bumblebee.”
“Under the Sea” from “The Little Mermaid” is on the Glad Tidings Handbell Choir’s agenda, conductor Judy Johnson promised.
Cinema scores
So is a medley of John Williams cinema scores, from “Star Wars” to “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”
George Gershwin tunes also will fill the sanctuary, as the choir offers his “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Embraceable You” and “Rhapsody in Blue.”
Ehling and the Peninsula Singers will expand upon that with four songs from the Gershwin brothers, George and Ira, including “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.”
“All I Ask of You” from “Phantom of the Opera” will round out the singers’ performance.
These are local voices, Johnson said, for a nonprofit that may otherwise fall off Sequim-Port Angeles residents’ donation priority list.
“Last year, we did a concert for Haitian earthquake relief,” she added.
“This year, we want to focus on the local.”
The Boys & Girls Clubs’ after-school programs are something “our youth really need.”
