‘Miss Representation’ returns for second screening

CHIMACUM — “Miss Representation,” a documentary about portrayals of women in the media — music videos, news reports, movies — inspired a passionate discussion last month in Port Townsend, so it’s back for another public showing at Chimacum High School.

“The last event was overflowing, and it was clear we needed to continue this conversation,” said Tina Flores-McCleese, an organizer of the encore screening Tuesday in the school auditorium at 91 West Valley Road.

Admission is free to the 6:30 p.m. movie. The 90-minute documentary features Jane Fonda, Gloria Steinem, Katie Couric, Rosario Dawson, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho and other outspoken women.

After “Miss Representation’s” credits roll Tuesday night, audience members are invited to stay for a conversation about it.

Hosting the discussion will be a panel of community members, including Samantha Goldblatt and Chad Anderson, both Port Townsend High School students; Chauncey Tudhope-Locklear, cofounder of the ReCyclery; Thomas Crubaugh of the Port Townsend Library Foundation board; Erin Fristad, director of Goddard College in Port Townsend; and documentarian Ellen Frick. Port Townsend Film Institute executive director Janette Force will serve as moderator.

Flores-McCleese, president of the local accounting firm Clarity Enterprises, saw the movie March 15 at Fort Worden State Park’s JFK Hall, and was galvanized. And she wasn’t alone. “Miss Representation” moved Port Townsender Jane Kopriva so much that “she made a specific donation to make sure that we made this available to our area youth,” Flores-McCleese noted.

“Miss Representation” will have yet another screening at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd. in Port Angeles, at 7 p.m. Friday, May 11. A panel discussion will follow that showing too; more details about it and the film series at the college are at www.PenCol.edu.
