PORT TOWNSEND — Corky Parker, author of the graphic memoir “La Finca: Love, Loss and Laundry on a Tiny Puerto Rican Island,” will introduce her book and have a discussion this Saturday afternoon.
The event will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Aldrich’s Market, 940 Lawrence St. There is no admission charge.
“It’s not really a reading per se. It’s more of book signing and talk — about memoir, and what it’s like to tell your story and get it published,” Parker said.
She added she hopes the discussion will lead to formation of journaling or writing groups: one for teenagers and one for adults.
“I want to take a gauge on community interest,” she said.
Parker is thinking of an eight-week writing workshop in the spring — with no cost to the participants.
To be invited are “folks who write for themselves, but haven’t ever had the chance to be part of a writing group or workshop, from either financial restraints or fear,” she said.
The intention, Parker added, is to find one’s own voice and tell the true story of a part of life, as she did in “La Finca.”
Published this year by Trinity University Press, the book is the saga of opening a bed and breakfast on the island of Vieques. Parker operated the inn for many years before moving back to her home in Port Townsend.
