Lectures on crabs scheduled in-person and online this week

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Marine Science Center and Jefferson County Marine Resources Committee will co-sponsor lectures on crabs during the upcoming week.

• The Pacific Northwest Crab Research Group will present “Dungeness Crab in the Salish Sea: A Case Study in Collaborative Research for a Sustainable Fishing Future” from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Speakers include: Emily Buckner, program coordinator, Puget Sound Restoration Fund; Katelyn Bosely, Puget Sound crustacean biologist, Department of Fish and Wildlife; and Elizabeth Tobin, shellfish program manager, Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe.

This talk will cover the life history of Dungeness crab, the management of the Dungeness crab fishery and the goals and mission of the Crab Research Group.

Speakers will also discuss the group’s Larval Crab Monitoring Network.

• Jefferson County Marine Resources Committee and Port Townsend Marine Science Center will demonstrate larval crab monitoring from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The free demonstration is at the pier at the marine science center’s aquarium, 532 Battery Way.

Emily Buckner and Ali Redman will bring up the light trap from under the pier to demonstrate the protocol used for their research, provide a closer look at what is in the light trap and answer questions.
