JOHN NELSON’S LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Music scene heating up as summer arrives

SUMMER IS FINALLY here, and it was actually warm the first day — but not as hot as our local live music scene, which is really heating up with more live music at farmers markets, community concerts, festivals and fairs.

Port Angeles

■ A Port Angeles favorite roots, rock ‘n’ blues band is back at the Junction Roadhouse, junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 112 five miles west of Port Angeles, on Saturday. Junkyard Jane will get you on the dance floor from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $5 cover.

Need a ride? All Points Charters & Tours will be running the shuttle from 8 p.m. to closing. Phone 360-775-9128 to make a reservation or phone for a ride.

Johnnie Mustang hosts the Sunday Junction Jam from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Next Wednesday, banjo craftsman Jason Mogi and bassist Paul Stehr-Green play from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

■ Tonight at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, come on down for Jerry’s Country Jam from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. If country’s your style, come and dance or play plugged or unplugged.

On Friday, Chantilly Lace plays classic rock from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. and begins at 7 p.m. Saturday.

■ On Friday at Wine on the Waterfront (WOW) at The Landing mall at 115 Railroad Ave., Jason Mogi (Deadwood Revival) and Paul Stehr-Green (SuperTrees) combine for a night of hoedown-meets-rock ‘n’ roll at 8:30 p.m. $5 cover.

On Saturday, get set for an evening of chicken-pickin’, old-timey music from Cort Armstrong at 8 p.m. $3 cover.

■ Local favorites abound this weekend, and Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St., has local band-turned-Hawaiian Free Sound back in town playin’ funk/blues and roots rock and reggae at 9 p.m. $3 cover.

On Saturday, internationally known Blumeadows is in town because he has heard Port Angeles is a great live music town. He’ll be playing funky rock and reggae from 9 p.m. $3 cover.

■ On Friday, Chuck Grall, Les Wamboldt and Olde Tyme Country perform at the Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 W. U.S. Highway 101, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Dave and Rosalie Secord and the Luck of the Draw Band welcome guests Katie and Rebecca for an evening of acoustic country, bluegrass and old-time music from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

■ On Monday, Rusty and Duke entertain at Smuggler’s Landing at The Landing mall at 115 Railroad Ave. with some pickin’ and sweet singin’ from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ Every Tuesday evening at the Port Angeles Senior Center, Seventh and Peabody streets, the Port Angeles Senior Swingers present Wally and the Boys playing ballroom dance favorites for the dancing pleasure of all adults 45 years and older from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $5 cover, first-timers free!

■ On Wednesday at Dupuis Restaurant, 256861 U.S. Highway 101, Bob and Dave play blues with a brew and barbecue from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Joyce

■ On Saturday at the Salt Creek Restaurant and Lounge, state Highway 112 and Camp Hayden Road, Ain’t Dead Yet (Steve Ketchum, Cordy Ketchum and Patrick Melville) play country and more at 8 p.m.

Sequim and Blyn

■ On Friday at the Oasis Bar & Grill, 301 E. Washington St., the Old Sidekicks perform from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, the Denny Secord Trio plays bluegrass and country from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

■ On Saturday at Randy’s Place at Three Crabs Restaurant on 3 Crabs Road, Dave and Rosalie Secord entertain with old-time and bluegrass in an upbeat, fun style with an occasional joke thrown in (by Dave, of course; he just can’t help it) at 6 p.m.

■ On Wednesday at Mugs ‘n’ Jugs Bar & Grill, 735 W. Washington St., Jimmy Hoffman and friends perform unplugged from 7 p.m. to midnight. Donations welcome.

■ At The Buzz, 128 N. Sequim Ave., Kelly Thomas and Victor Reventlow host the very popular and rousing open mic Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

■ On Friday at Stymie’s Bar & Grill at Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road, the Discovery Bay Pirates board ship for a night of fun from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Friday at Club Seven Lounge at 7 Cedars Casino, Blyn, Barry Burnett and Rachel Jorgensen perform Motown and classic rock from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Saturday is a fun night at Club Seven and that’s no bull ‘cuz it’s the mechanical bull with Denny Secord Jr. and Haywire getting that bull rockin’ from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. At

9 p.m., Whiskey River keeps that ol’ bull company till 1 a.m. with a tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd.

On Sunday, mellow out with the Stardust Big Band and swing and sway across the dance floor from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Monday, we be jammin’ with host Barry Burnett and friends, so bring your ax and/or vocal talents for the fun from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Port Townsend

■ On Friday at The Upstage, 923 Washington St., direct from The Dragons Tail of Whidbey Island comes the self-described “Warrior Princess Wordsmith,” Piper Reva, with songs from along life’s highway. Tales of love and love gone wrong, of friends and strangers, and tales of . . . well, just tales. You can’t go wrong at 8 p.m. $8 cover.

On Saturday, get your blues fix with Blues Attitude at 8 p.m. $7 cover.

On Sunday, catch a ride on the Locust Street Taxi at 6 p.m. with jazz, funk and rock. $5 cover.

On Tuesday, zydeco stars Curley Taylor and Zydeco Trouble perform at 7 p.m. $12 cover.

On Wednesday, Dave and Rosalie Secord and the Luck of the Draw Band play for a country western fundraiser for equine rescue by real horse people at 6 p.m. Cover by voluntary donation.

■ On Friday at Port Townsend Brewing Co., 330 10th St., Chuck Easton plays jazz from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Sunday, join the fun with their anniversary party with music by the Tool Shed Trio from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by The Better Half Band from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

On Sunday, enjoy the folk songs of the ’60s with Shady Grove from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

On Wednesday, the Steve Grandinetti Band plays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ On Saturday at Sirens, 823 Water St., help raise funds to restore the kinetic sculpture the “Magic Bus” with an Electric Koolaide Party with music by Locust Street Taxi from 8 p.m. to closing. There are games and prizes, too. The $10 suggested donation supports Port Townsend All Terrain Art (PTATA), a nonprofit organization.

■ On Saturday at the Castle Key, Seventh and Sheridan streets, the Fred Hoadly Trio plays jazz from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

■ On Friday at the Undertown, 211 Taylor St., The Better Half Band plays at 9 p.m. $5 cover.

■ On Friday, the Steve Grandinetti Band plays at the Uptown Pub, 1016 Lawrence St., from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $4 cover.

Piper Reva brings her songs uptown Saturday at 9 p.m.

■ On Friday at the Banana Leaf Thai Bistro, 609 Washington St., Howly Slim holds forth on guitar and vocals at 6 p.m.

Farmers markets

■ On Saturday at The Gateway in Port Angeles, Charlie Koesel performs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On Wednesday, Old Tyme Country with Chuck Grall, Pete Crose and Company play from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

■ On Wednesday at the Port Townsend Farmers Market, Howly Slim performs at 3 p.m. on guitar and vocals.

High notes

■ Enjoy the bluegrass of the Blackberry Bushes String Band of Seattle at Wednesday’s Concert on the Pier in Port Angeles from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ The 45-member Port Townsend Summer Band opens its 19th season Sunday from the gazebo at Chetzemoka Park, Port Townsend, at 3 p.m. There is no admission, but donations are welcome. It’s outside, so you know what to bring.

■ On Saturday, dance to the zydeco, blues and Cajun of Big Squeesy at the Quimper Grange, 1210 Corona St., Port Townsend, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. All ages welcome. $12 adults.
