Jefferson County Relay for Life this weekend

CHIMACUM — Jefferson County’s Relay for Life will kick off at 2 p.m. Saturday as teams work to raise money for cancer research.

The annual overnight event, located at HJ Carroll Park, 9884 state Highway 19, will last until 10 a.m. Sunday.

Music, food, games and entertainment will enliven the evening.

Nine teams already had raised by Thursday $10,902 of a $20,000 goal.

Proceeds go to the American Cancer Society to help it provide free information and support for people facing the disease today, as well as fund cancer research.

After an opening ceremony honoring those who have had experience with cancer, a survivors lap, caregivers lap and dinner are planned.

A luminaria ceremony honoring those who have died of cancer is set for 10 p.m. Saturday.

The closing ceremony is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

During Relay for Life events, members of each team take turns walking or running around the track or path. Teams participate in fundraising in the months leading up to the event.
