Hula history and lessons offered at library branches

PORT ANGELES — Kumu Hula Mokihana Melendez and Alaka’i Makana Caro will present a lesson on hula dancing at several North Olympic Library branches this weekend.

Melendez and Caro will explain the history of hula, demonstrate a kahiko and then teach a standard hula dance and basic Hawaiian words.

The free presentation, part of the Summer Reading Program, will be conducted outdoors, rain or shine.

Programs are set for:

• 3 p.m. Friday at Tillicum Park, Tillicum Lane in Forks.

• 10:30 a.m. Saturday, in the courtyard at the Port Angeles branch, 2210 S. Peabody St.

• 2 p.m. Saturday, in the field behind the Sequim branch, 601 N. Sequim Ave.
