SEKIU — Northwest Olympic Peninsula history buffs and the general public are invited to the first annual Hoko River-Cowan Ranch Heritage Day on Sunday, July 23.
It will be held at Hoko River State Park from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The event kicks off with informal tours of the historic 522-acre Cowan Ranch, which lies within the boundaries of the new state park.
North Olympic Peninsula residents with first-hand experience of the ranch will be encouraged to share their memories and observations with other tour participants.
Sunday’s activities continue at 2:30 p.m. at the Sekiu Community Center, 42 Rice St., Sekiu, when Larry Burtness of Peninsula College will present historic photos of Cowan Ranch, Cape Flattery Lighthouse and related people and places.
Attendees will be invited to tell stories about the Lamb and Cowan families, the ranch and the river.
People will also be asked suggest ways to preserve Cowan Ranch’s history while adapting it for state park use.
To get to the Hoko River State Park and Cowan Ranch, turn off Highway 101 onto Hoko-Ozette Road — the Cowan Ranch is the first ranch on the left.
