SEQUIM — Storm Troopers, Rydell High School seniors, cloned velociraptors, a little mermaid and even a dancing candlestick will invade the James Center for the Performing Arts in Sequim this weekend.
The Sequim City Band brings these and other characters to life at 7 p.m. Saturday when the band salutes blockbuster movies.
With the concert date at the height of summer temperatures, the free concert will take place Saturday evening — a first for the band and its audience.
In addition to the main “Star Wars” theme, “Star Wars Epic” by John Williams focuses on Princess Leia and Darth Vader. The program also will feature Williams’ soundtrack highlights for “Jurassic Park.”
Movie themes also address more whimsical moods including those from Alan Menken, known for penning several scores for classic Disney movies such as the “Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin.” The best-known music from these full-length animations include “Under the Sea,” “Be Our Guest” and “Arabian Nights.”
Another key concert piece includes Henry Mancini’s work from the comedy-mystery film “The Pink Panther,” featuring inept French police detective Inspector Jacques Clouseau.
The band also salutes the classic American Western, highlighted by the 1960 iconic main theme to “The Magnificent Seven” (composer Elmer Bernstein).
Other musical movie highlights include a compilation from “Grease!” (music by Jim Jacobs), movie themes from James Bond (music by Monty Norman, Paul and Linda McCartney, and John Barry) and various movie themes by Alan Silvestri — including those from “Forrest Gump” and “Back to the Future.”
Bring your lawn chair and sunshades and join announcer Bob Hitchcock and the Sequim City Band with a summer salute to blockbuster movies.
The Sequim City Band is now in its 26th season of presenting free public concerts and typically has a large audience for its August concert. Lawn seating at the James Center for the Performing Arts can easily accommodate 800 people.
To reach the James Center, enter the north section of Carrie Blake Park from North Blake Avenue at the Fir Street intersection, then follow the sign to the parking lot.
