Growing blueberries topic of talk

PORT ANGELES — Veteran WSU Clallam County Master Gardener Jeanette Stehr-Green will talk about blueberry plants at noon today.

The free presentation will be in the county commissioners’ meeting room (160) of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St. It is part of the Green Thumb Garden Tips education series sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners.

Stehr-Green has learned to overcome alkaline soil, as well as damage from deer, birds and drought, to produce a healthy blueberry crop.

She will describe the ideal planting site for blueberries and soil acidity, fertilization and watering requirements. She also will provide tips for pruning blueberry bushes and identify good resources on growing blueberries.

Stehr-Green has been a Master Gardener since 2003. A frequent educational speaker for the Master Gardener program, she has written numerous articles for local newspaper gardening columns, appears monthly on the “Todd Ortloff Show” on KONP and may be heard on the KSQM “Garden Show.” She also leads summer garden walks at the Fifth Street Garden in Port Angeles.
